Number two turned thirteen this week and I got that sinking feeling that comes with your little one turning into a teenager!
He is growing into an independent young man that has a little job at our local skatepark and loves to spend time on his beloved X Box which leaves little quality time for us as a family.
This weekend we went for a meal to celebrate his and my husbands birthday followed by a lovely long walk through Box Hill. This is something the the rest of us do most weekends whilst he is busy at the skatepark.
His face hit the floor at the thought of walking through muddy fields with no technology or skate ramps in sight.
Once he realised this was his only option he really let himself go back to that carefree child he is and had so much fun running around with his brothers and sisters, trying to grab rope swings across the stream and found it hilarious to get soaked crossing the stepping stones that had become half immersed due to the heavy rainfall.
We walked and chatted about nothing in particular for hours and he said how much he had enjoyed his day.
Im making it my mission to make him come along with us more from now on as I’m a great believer in letting children do what they love and have their own space but these years have already flown by and it’s days like these that cost nothing but mean so much.
Nice. I have a 14 year old boy as well, the years seem to be flying by.
They do pass way to quickly don’t they? X
Most definitely. I also have a 17 year old daughter (nearly 18) working, driving, going out – I remember when I was that age and it doesn’t feel like it was that long ago!!
My eldest is just 18 and I still feel they age most of the time!! X

I’m so pleased the walk at Box Hill worked out well and I must say I’m not surprised. Your number 2 sounds just like my number 3, who is also 13. If he has the option to stay home and play computer games he will always choose that, yet if we can winkle him out and wipe away the hideous ‘I’m bored, your boring’ face he actually has a great time with us. It’s a funny age and balancing their space to do their own thing with keeping them involved with family activities is not easy. I hope you have many more family fun times like this ahead when your teen can relax the teen guard for a while. Thank you so much for sharing a lovely time out on Country Kids.
It really is so hard as they would love to have free reign all the time but they are still so young.
I have a problem as we have such big age gaps so it’s hard to keep them all happy at the same time.
At least with just going for s good long walk they can make their own entertainment x
I think you’re doing really well keeping your family days out going, there is always someone here who says “do we have to go” whatever it is!

haha my brother is now 13 and is very much the same, “why should I leave the confines of my pit” is the usual gist we get from his grunts. It is so lovely when you manage to force them out and they come out of their shells a bit! – plus box hill is great for walking and exploring 🙂
