Celebrating The Small Things:Week Twenty Eight

Well I nearly catching my tail and I have made it to the end of the school term with my ‘Celebrating The Small Things’ series. I have to say that I’m dreading Oscar starting school but I will give me a chance to really get my working day in order and hopefully get more organised…well we will see!

This week I am taking about school awards, park trips and kids fashion.

Dot To Dot London – My blog covers such a variety of topics which I often think I should kerb to be a little more niche but then realise being a bit of everything opens up some great opportunities. One of which being kids fashion that I have a real passion for.

I have always loved kitting the kids out and to be honest their wardrobes are always way better than mine.

The other week I got the chance to go along to Dot London which is a press show for all kinds of fabulous children’s wear brands. There were some of my favourites there that I have worked with before such as Tootsa McGinty and some brand new companies that I can’t wait to see the Autumn/Winter.

Hours And Hours In The Park – One little thing I am certainly celebrating is the amazing weather we have been blessed with this year. We are huge fans of the great outdoors and it has been made so much more accessible with the sunshine on tap that we have had. I honestly don’t think we have had as many picnics and park trips as we have this year.

Feeling Proud – Izzy has just finished her first year at high school and I have to say I couldn’t be prouder of all she has achieved in her time there. She has never been naturally gifted when it comes to the academic side of life but she always gives her all and works to be best of her ability. This was recognised at the end of term when she received an award for all her efforts and I actually think I was happier than her about it!

A Rainy Day At Chessington World Of Adventures

I’m sure you are all going to think I have completely lost my mind when I say this, but I absolutely love visiting Chessington World Of Adventures on a rainy day! Don’t get me wrong torrential rain and thunderstorms might make me think twice but a bit of rain never hurt anyone!

In fact for me I find there are a whole heap of benefits to visiting on a rainy day. I mean there are a fair few water rides in the park anyway so why not just embrace it as once you’re wet you’re wet!

We arrived on Friday and within minutes the heavens opened and we took shelter in the Smokehouse BBQ which was a great way to fill our bellies before we started the day.

They offer a great range of BBQ style food such as pulled pork, chicken and hot dogs served with crunchy chips, sweet potato fries and the best creamed sweetcorn I’ve tasted.

Full up and ready to face the showers we made our way to our first ride of the day which is always the Gruffalo River Ride, a favourite of the boys as well as mine. With the majority of the queuing done undercover and the ride itself inside we stayed pretty dry.

From here we moved onto the the Scorpion Express that my little adrenaline junkies love and I have to say speeding around the track whilst getting a face full of rain just added to the excitement.

Zufari was next on the list and I thought the animals might have been talking shelter so we were more than happy to see the giraffes and rhinos up close to the jeep in all their majestic glory.

Due to everyone being scared off by the weather the queue times were incredibly short for the summer holidays and we managed to get on all of our favourite rides within a few hours which allowed me some time to put my feet up in the cafe while the kids dried off in the Dragon’s Playhouse soft play area.

I feel like I’ve let you into a precious secret here but if you are not scared of getting a little wet then the short queue time, space inside restaurants and the calmer pace of things are definitely a huge bonus.

Easter Fun At Morden Hall Park

I think this has to be the first year for as long as I can remember that we haven’t taken part in a National Trust easter egg hunt and I have to say that I’m pretty sad about that! The Easter weekend just seemed so fun that we didn’t get a chance to fit it in.

That said we couldn’t get through the holidays without a trip to one of their properties and we decided on Morden Hall Park as its been a good while since we’ve had a visit there.

After a pitstop at the cafe for coffee and cake we were greeted at the main entrance by a super friendly volunteer who set about telling us how we could join in wth the Duck Trail which allowed the children to set off around the grounds in search of different species of ducks, ticking them off on their sheet as they go and showing them some food along the way.

Morden Hall Park has had a lot of work done to it since we were last there and absolutely loved the wooden pathways and lookout points that had been added to the wetland area.

The boys spent ages dipping in sticks and trying to find the crocodiles my Dad had told them were lurking beneath!

We played Pooh Sticks on the bridges, ran through all the open spaces, climbed trees and got covered in mud…exactly what a day should be full of!

Morden Hall Park is also perfectly positioned for a short walk to Deen City Farm where the children got to feed and get up close to lots of lovely farm animals from pigs, sheep and even ferrets.

The children were filthy dirty and thoroughly worn out after a wonderful day and Morden Hall Park certainly come with a big thumbs up from us.

Finding New Places To Explore:Chipstead Mead Playground

I have come to the conclusion that I am allergic to being indoors!

I literally go stir crazy being at home and am always looking for new places to get out and about with the children.

My Dad had been out on his bike and came across a new playground in Chipstead Village so we went along to check it out today.

It was still thick with frost when we arrived and we spend a good while shooting pebbles across the frozen pond.

Tucked away just behind the pond is a lovely new playground with beautiful wooden equipment that I would say is most suited to under 10’s although there is a cool looking zip wire and a pretty high climbing frame that would be good for older children too.

We stayed for a good while checking everything out and number five throughly enjoyed climbing, swinging and running around.

We stopped for a while and hid away in one the little hideaways to have a little bit of coffee shop role play before heading home to warm up with a proper coffee!

This was a great little find for us and we will be back for some more exploring very soon.

Scootaheadz Danny Dino Review

All of my children have loved scooting and my eldest son got pretty good, which even lead to a little part time job at a local skate park.

This really rubbed off on the youngest two and now it’s hard to go anywhere without them bringing their scooter along!

Scooters for preschoolers have become increasing popular and a trip to the park can often end up with a bit of a puzzle as to who’s is who’s.

When we were asked to try out the Danny Dino from Scootaheadz I knew the boys would love it and it would be something to add a little individuality to make our scooter stand out from the crowd in the sea of scooters at the park!

Danny Dino arrived and we were immediately taken with his loveable face.

Attaching him to the scooter was super easy. You supply have to make a like room between the handle bars, face his nose towards the sky and slip on, then pull forwards to fix in place.

My boys can destruct anything but he stated firmly in place for the whole trip.

There are other fun and colourful characters than can be chosen that are just as cute as Danny.

We might have to get another one just so he doesn’t get lonely!

*we were provided with the Scootahead for the purpose of this review and they are all my own, honest opinions.

Warming Up At Priscilla’s Tearoom

After a bad start to the week with number four being poorly today was the perfect day to get the little ones outside and get some fresh air.

Scooting is always a favourite in this house and luckily enough one of our local parks in Sanderstead, Surrey has a wonderful area that younger children can safely scoot and ride their bike with the fun of bumps, hills and obstacles.

After wearing them out with a good few laps we had a fun around in the playground and then popped into Priscilla’s Tearoom that is located directly next to the park to warm ourselves up and grab something to eat.

The tearoom has a wonderful homely feel and is full with beautiful vintage furniture and decorations.

There are shelves filled with stunning homemade gifts and food items that can be purchased at very reasonable prices.

The boys immediately made themselves at home and grabbed themselves a snack from the counter whist I ordered my coffee and chatted to the lovely lady serving us.

Our hot drinks were bought over in pretty cups and saucers which fitted in perfectly with their theme.  Even number four’s babychinno was served in a cup and saucer which is a nice change from the usual plastic cup children’s drinks are usually served in.

We were a little early for lunch but there was a good selection of rolls and sandwiches on offer and some yummy homemade cake that I will be back to sample when I’m not being so good!  All of there produce is locally sourced which is a real pull for me as it is highly important for local businesses to support each other for everyone to thrive.

Number five was on form and throwing a spectacular ‘terrible two’s’tantrum for the majority of our visit but at no time was I made to feel uncomfortable as is the case with so many places you can visit with little ones.

There is a real sence of community spirit here and they put on many groups such as book clubs and knitting clubs making it more than just a stop off when visiting the park.

We finished our trip off by popping to the duck pond which is only a few minutes away from the tearoom and a great way to round off our day.

This really is a lovely little tea room that is well worth a visit.  We will be back very soon to have a spot of lunch and can’t wait for some warmer weather to sit outside and enjoy an ice cream or two!
We were asked to come along and try out the tea room for the purpose of this review and they are all my own honest opinions.

Point And Shoot:Wintry Park Visit

I really love taking photos and although I’m a complete novice it is something I really enjoy and would love to learn more about.

When the lovely Aby over at You Baby Me Mummy posted on Twitter about her fantastic linky Point And Shoot which allows bloggers to tell a story of their weekend through pictures, I thought this would be the perfect opportunity to work on my skills and take a look at what other bloggers get up to with their photography.

This weekend felt like the first one of winter to me.  We started our Saturday morning gazing out of the window with the little ones praying the snow would settle.

On Sunday we braved the cold and took a trip to the park which looked stunning as the sun went down as the beautiful colours filled the sky.

Hunting For Dinosaurs At Dinosaur Island

The sun finally came out for us today and my husband had some unusual time off, so we decided to venture out a little bit and take a drive to Horsham in West Sussex to visit Dinosaur Island.

We were super exited to follow the dinosaur footprints all the way down to the fabulous play area that had everything you could ask for.

There was a great sandpit with buckets to fill with sand and pull up and down, fabulous things to climb on and explore, along with brilliant swings and slides.

After we had worn ourselves out it in the playground we grabbed an ice cream and made our way down to the lake in the country park.

There was plenty of open space to set ourselves up to paddle in the lovely warm lake.

I could have sat here watching the kids paddle all day.  They were more than happy splashing around and throwing pebbles for a good few hours.

We were a little unorganised today before we set out and only got a few hours over here.

Next time we will defiantly be packing a big picnic and making a whole day of it.

Birthday Celebrations At Southbank

I have done a fair bit of travelling over the years, but London always holds a special place in my heart.

I love the hustle and bustle, the eclectic range of people and the wonderful architecture the city has to offer.

We are only about a 30min train ride from central London but don’t visit that often as squeezing on and off the trains with all the children is no mean feat!  For us Southbank is always the perfect place as it is only two overground trains away and directly outside Waterloo station.

We went to celebrate my eldest turning 18 and we knew there would be plenty of things for us all to do once we got there.

We we not disappointed as we got there and after a short walk came across a super cool exhibition that offered free badge making and colouring for the children.

As always mine were starving so we had a quick coffee and cake stop before walking along the river.

Once we were refuelled we went exploring and found some cool brightly coloured plastic strips that they had great fun running in and out of, a great sandpit that they had a great time digging in, and our usual trip to the park.

We stood for a while looking at the street entertainers who scared the life out of number four to start with!

Number two loves scooting and skate boarding so we spent a good while by the skatepark watching all the tricks.

After lunch we spent our last bit of time there taking in the sights whilst number one had her first ‘legal’ drink!

A wonderful day was had by all and we will be coming back very soon to check out the Carston Holler exhibition at the Hayward Gallery which looks  fantastic.

Top Outdoor Summer Activities In Surrey

With the summer holidays now upon us I’m sure you will all be planning what to do to keep your little once occupied.

With the weather holding out for us at the moment I wanted to give you a few of my favourite days out in the great outdoors in Surrey.

Mayfield Lavender Fields

The Mayfield Lavender Fields are truly a sight to behold and I would question anybody that is not stunned by its beauty.

They can be found just outside Banstead, Surrey and are well worth a visit.

This year the car parking is only £1 but be warned it gets extremely busy and there is not a great deal of parking.

There is a lovely little cafe where you can stop to get refreshments while taking in the sights.  And new this year they have also included a tractor ride.

Mine are more than happy running in between the flowers and searching for bugs whilst I try and capture the beauty on my camera.

Godstone Farm

For me Godstone Farm is great as it covers a variety of ages.

They have massive fields that you can walk around whilst looking at the larger animals such as cows, pigs and donkeys.

The children have a chance to get hands on with the smaller animals of the farm in the petting area.  Mine all love this as they can stroke and hold the rabbits and chickens.

There are set times during the day where you can watch the animals being fed which is always great fun.

The play activities here are endless.  There is a huge adventure playground at the top of the field with everything you could imagine.

There is a section with ride on toys for the younger children as well as several sandpits.

Mine all love the large soft play area that also homes a small cafe so you can relax whist the children play.

As far as eating goes there is a good cafe that serves reasonably priced hot and cold food.  Or there is the option of picnicking with ample picnic areas.

Priory Park

This is our all time favourite park.  It has everything you could expect to get from a local park and more.

They have a beautifully designed playground with the usual swings and slides with the added extras of a large sandpit and water features that are perfect for the summer.
The grounds are vast and have a wonderful fountain, surrounded by pretty gardens we often picnic by.

At the opposite end of the park there is a beautiful lake where you can feed the ducks and take a leisurely walk around.

Numbers two’s favourite park is the large skatepark which is perfect for older children.

During the holiday there are always lots free activities put on for the children, and in the past we have taken part in bug hunting, den building and a great sports activity day.

Lastly in the centre of the park is a great cafe Pistachios In The Park offering great food and snacks that really adds to the whole day.

Chessington World Of Adventures

We are lucky enough to have annual passes for this great theme park and visit many times a year.

It gets bigger and better each time we visit and covers all of my children’s ages from 1-18.

I tend to let the oldest two wander off by themselves and go on all the thrill seeking rides that CWOA has to offer.

I can then take the younger ones to explore the Sealife centre, petting farm, massive zoo full of wonderful animals and to ride on the fabulous rides that are more suitable for their age.

We don’t normally take food with us as its a lot to carry around and there are plenty of great restaurants to chose from.

All of mine love to watch the exuberant Madagascar show that is put on a couple of times a day and the sea lion and penguin shows always go down a treat.

It really is a fun packed day and I would advice to get there early to ensure you get a go on the biggest and most popular rides without to much of a queue.

Priory Farm

This is a garden centre with a difference!

There is a large garden centre with all the usual things on offer which also houses a great coffee shop with wonderful hot and cold food, and the most wonderful cakes.

Attached to this is a newly refurbished play area that we have yet to visit this year.  Across from here is a huge pirate ship that mine all love to play on and a picnic area directly next to it which is fantastic to sit and watch them play.

Our favourite part of the farm is the discovery walk.  You pick up your quiz sheet at the start which takes you around all the different parts of the trail answering questions as you go.  At the top we usually stop for a rest and take in the views.  Near the end there is a chance to feed the fish which is my favourite part!!

Our day normally finishes with a walk around the well stock farm shop to pick something nice for our tea.

Chartwell House

If you are a reader of my blog you will know that National Trust venues are my favourite.

Chartwell House is one of the best for my family as it has such a lot to occupy tiny minds.

The gardens are exquisite and there is something different everywhere you turn.

I love the tiny playhouse that would have been used by the house owners for so many years before.

You can really educate the children in a fun way here as they are taking in information and not knowing it!

Keep an eye on their website as there are always some great cheap or free activities going on that mine all love.

We are yet to venture into the house as in not sure my nerves could take that until the small ones are a little older.

Flower Farm

Fruit picking is a brilliant activity for all the family.  It teaches children where the fruit originally comes from, gives them some exercise and they get a yummy, healthy treat at the end.

At flower farm there is always a good variety of different fruit and vegetable to pick at good prices.

They also have a lovely farm shop and a small tea room that is unfortunately closed for refurbishment at the moment.

I hope you have found some inspiration for days out here and I will be posting another list very soon so keep your eyes peeled.
