Jamie’s Italian Guilford:Review

I am a little ashamed to say that even though I have been a huge fan of Jamie Oliver since his ‘Naked Chef’ days I have never set foot in to one of his restaurants.

His immense passion for food and will to share this with every walk of life is one of the things I love about him and I know this love and passion will be passed into all his restaurants.

We were recently asked to go along to Jamie’s Guilford branchto see what we though which was a very exciting prospect for me.

A short drive into Guilford lead us to a quirky shaped building that homed Jamie’s Italian.

We were shown upstairs to our table in the brightly coloured restaurant that had had an industrial feel softened by glimpses of rustic Italy.

We had the youngest two with us which is always a challenge when eating out as their attention span leaves a lot to be desired.

Luckily as soon as we were seated the boys were given activity sheets and fantastic viewfinders that they could chose their meal from…these were a hit with the big kids too!

The children’s menu was a great mix of the usual suspects mixed with dishes such as fish stew and gnocchi which is really refreshing to see as not all children like a plate of beige food for every meal!

Oscar went for the baby beefburger which was served with a portion of sweet potato fries and a delicious salad.

Frankie had a bit of a harder time in choosing as his multiple allergies were a little hard to cater for, but our waitress worked round them and was able to alter the happy chicken lollipops that were also served with sweet potato fries and much to Frankie’s excitement a salad in a jar that he could shake himself to cover with dressing.

They still had plenty of room for pudding and Frankie was extremely happy with his strawberry and mango lollipop whist Oscar went for the more indulgent warm chocolate brownie that much to his delight was topped with popcorn.

Darren and I went for the Super Lunch which is a great value set menu where you can chose from a good variety of dishes and have either two or three courses.

The greediness in me went for the three courses while Darren only opted for two.

Pate is on of my favourites but I can be a little fussy with it. I wasn’t disappointed and the creamy chicken liver pate that covered the crispy bruschetta and made for the perfect combination.

I’m not normally a burger fan but the Gennaro’s Chicken Club caught my eye and I was really glad I went for it.

The soft brioche roll was filled with succulent chicken, crispy pancetta, spicy mayo, rocket and juicy tomato.

If you are a follower of my blog and have read my restaurant reviews you will know that my husband is a creature of habit and calamari and steak are choices pretty much every time we dine out.

Jamie’s Italian had a little twist on the usual calamari and was instead a selection of battered fish and squid that have been coated in a delicately spiced fennel flour and served with a sharp garlic and lemon aioli.

The steak was a little different too as it had first been marinated then served with a garlic butter, crispy fries and a beautiful purple slaw that set off the meal wonderfully.

The children full and happily playing I endulged in Jamie’s favourite lemon polenta cake which was served with cream and a fruit coulis.

The texture the polenta gave the cake was a good change to a traditional sponge style recipe but I could have done with a little bit more of a lemony kick.

We all thoroughly enjoyed our first experience of Jamie’s Italian from the warm welcome to the delicious food.

I think the real pull for me though was the attention to the children’s menu that was not only vast and full of variety but allowed the children to get hands on with their choices and preparation of the meal which I always find is key to encouraging them to eat and try new things.

If you have been inspired to try Jamie’s Italian out for yourself then from now until the 31st August one child eat free with every paying adult so it’s the perfect time to try it out.

Kiddie Free Evening At FEGO

A while ago now I went along to FEGO in Banstead with Frankie and Oscar to see what they had to offer in the way of family dining.

We were hugely impressed with everything they had to offer…so much so that when I was asked to come back and sample their evening menu I couldn’t wait.

I’m sure I’m not the only parent who craves a little adult time away from the daily routine of taking care of the family, in fact I think it is important to take a break from it all, give yourself a little headspace and enjoy some adult conversation.

I hadn’t had a night out with my younger sister since Christmas so we were both really looking forward to some uninterrupted chit chat over dinner.

We arrived at FEGO and were taken to our table where our super friendly waitress guided me through the drinks menu and helped to pick out a cocktail she thought would take my fancy.

I went for a pornstar martini that I sipped on whilst we perused the menu.

It was a tough decision and I flitted from burgers to salads, pizzas and steaks until I finally settled on a succulent piece of salmon coated in lemon and olive oil served with a sweet potato side salad that was covered with a whole grain mustard dressing.

My sister went with the veggie curry that was a gorgeous combination of cauliflower, spinach, sweet potato, aubergine and butternut squash in a mildly, creamy curry sauce served with fluffy basmati rice and a really different mango salsa that made a pleasant change from the usual chutney.

The desert menu was then shown to us and although every part of me wanted to opt for the fruit plater to save my waistline, my willpower was not strong enough to resist the sharing platter of mini puddings.

This was probably not the best choice for sisters who still have that childlike tendency to argue over who has had the biggest portion!

Each and every pudding was a taste sensation with something different with each mouthful.

The lemon posset gave you that bit of sharpness, the chocolate brownies and ice cream were there to satisfy the love for chocolate and the pasteis de nata filled the want for something creamy.

But my favourite had to be the peppermint crisp pudding that was a combination hard to describe so I will leave it down to you to try for yourself.

Pleasantly full we remained at the table and chatted for ages with another cheeky cocktail.

At no point did we feel pressured to leave and were more than happy taking in the great atmosphere, relaxing and making the most of some rare time out.

Never before have I visited a restaurant at serval different times of day and have been able to enjoy completly different yet equally as wonderful experiences.

FEGO really have covered every base and I have to say that evening dining has been my favourite experience and one that will be having me coming back time and time again.

FEGO Banstead:A Eatery Perfect For All The Family

FEGO Banstead:A Eatery Perfect For All The Family

How often do you walk past a restaurant or cafe and immediately dismiss it for not being ‘child friendly’?

For me this is something I do regularly with my brood, as lets face it eating out with small children isn’t always the most enjoyable and stress free experience.

For a while now I have passed by FEGO in Banstead gazing in at their stunning decor and  scrumptious looking cakes longing for a few childfree hours to while away my time.

It looked far to pristine to take my motley crew into and the thought of them in there would bring me out in a cold sweat before my feet passed the threshold!

With these thoughts still firmly in my mind when I was asked along to visit FEGO I was more than a little apprehensive as to how they would cater for us.

We arrived at FEGO on a busy lunchtime during half term and were greeted with a smile and shown to our table near the back of the restaurant that was buzzing with a great atmosphere and full of a real eclectic group of people…including children!

The menus were brought over and I was happy to see there were a good range of different meals without the menu being large and over bearing. We were also welcome to chose from the breakfast menu even though we were there for a late lunch.

I love flexibility in restaurants as lets face it a stack of warm pancakes are welcome at anytime of day!

There is something to cater for all tastes from full english breakfasts to delicious salads, juicy burgers to pizzas and so much more.

The boys were kept amused with the colouring sheets while waiting for their burgers that they picked from a great selection that offers something a little different to the usual chip heavy childrens menu.

I opted for spicy scrambled eggs that were a tasty combination of eggs, cheese, avocado and tomatoes with a fiery kick of jalapeño and my obligatory soya latte.

Frankie’s allergies were catered for brilliantly and not a scrap of their burgers were left on either of their plates.

Crispy fresh chicken breasts served in soft rolls with plenty of salad and juicy, homemade beef burgers would be hard to resist.

It wouldn’t be a meal out without a sweet treat to finish it off. The boys went for a bowl of creamy blueberry ice cream and a sticky waffle covered in vanilla ice cream and sumptuous chocolate sauce.

All my preconceived ideas of this restaurant were quashed the minute I entered the restaurant.

The staff were all warm and welcoming, the food was beautifully presented and a delight to eat and the decor is simply stunning.

FEGO has something to offer the whole family from grabbing a quick pastry to a cosy date night with a cheeky cocktail or two.

There is so much more that I want to try such with their infamous ‘coffee in a cone’ being top of my list.

Chi Kitchen:Review

Ordinarily if someone asked you to come along to have lunch at at a department store I’m sure you wouldn’t be filled with excitement.

Admittedly when I was asked along to a review a restaurant inside Debenhams, Oxford Street my imidiate thoughts were curled up sandwiches in plastic wrappers and serve yourself coffee.

Upon arriving at Chi Kitchen this couldn’t be further from the truth.

With a completely separate entrance at  the back of the store as well as an internal entrance that welcomes you straight into a super cool champagne bar that overlooks the sushi preparation area, it wasn’t like anything I had experienced before.

The attentive staff saw us to our table and talked us through the vast menu that is a real voyage through South East Asia; offering dishes from Thailand, China, Japan, Vietnam, Malaysia and Korea.

My husband who is a real sushi lover opted for the salmon and tuna sashimi and California rolls.

The presentation was absolute perfection! The fish was served on a bed of perfectly handcrafted vegetables with clouds of billowing dry ice.

I opted for prawn dimsum and Thai green curry.

The dimsum were light and airy balls of perfection they just melted in the mouth.

The curry was the perfect blend of creaminess with a spicy kick that wasn’t to over powering.

I don’t normally go for puddings in Asian restaurants as I’m normally a bit disappointed with the small choice and factory supplied choices that are normally on offer.

Chi Kitchen however didn’t fall short in this area and it was at tricky choice between a passion fruit cheesecake and a mango creme brûlée.

The brûlée won and the crispy topping hid a delightfully creamy centre that I didn’t want to end.

Our meal was a complete experience for all the senses and completely smashed my preconceived ideas of superstore dining.

It is certainly somewhere to try whist out and about shopping or somewhere to make more of an evening of which is on our list to do next time!

Jackson And Rye Guilford:Review

Just before Christmas we made our way into Guilford to the launch evening of the brand new Jackson and Rye restaurant that has just hit town.

Jackson and Rye are already a very well established chain that have bought a touch of London style dining to the heart of Guilford.

The dimly lit restaurant and dark decor set the tone for the New York style dining they are famous for.

Once seated we were shown a menu that was so hard to chose from as the variety was so great.

We started with mini corn dogs that had caught our eyes a few minutes before ordering, a huge plate of flavoursome crunchy chorizo prawns and some wonderfully crispy buffalo chicken wings.

Our eyes may have been bigger than our bellies as the portions were so generous that after the appetisers we were already pretty full.

Mains arrived promptly and my Cajun spiced chicken was super succulent and accompanied perfectly with a fresh sweetcorn succotash that was a welcome change from the richness of the starters.

My steak loving husband picked his favourite fillet steak and was more than happy with the juicy cut of meat and the crispy fries that set it off perfectly.

Literally bursting at the seams I still made room for a sticky potted cheese cake that was served with a tart berry compote.

We went along as a couple but this restaurant would also cater well for our large family; we looked on at a table full of little ones throughly enjoying a large variety of food from the menu.

Jackson and Rye was a welcoming, relaxed restaurant that still had that feeling of something a little special. They have taken the usual American dining experience and given it a touch of class.

After chatting with the friendly waiting staff we found the restaurant is infamous for their weekend brunch and we will certainly be back soon to sample this soon!

The Botanist Resturant Review

Exposed brickwork, quirky lighting and friendly faces were what we were greeted with when we entered The Botonist in Farnham the other week.

There was a really buzzy feel as we entered the bar area where people were busy chatting and sampling drinks from the huge cocktail menu they have on offer.

We were shown upstairs to our table in a more subdued area where we had a beautiful glass of red wine whist mulling over the gastro pub style menu.

The attentive waitress came over to take our order which for starters consisted of chicken liver and rum pate with beetroot and onion chutney for me and calamari for my husband.

It was when the starters were presented that the whole theme of the resturant  was bought to life.

My pate came served in a super cute mini plant pot with the accompanying chutney in a miniature wheelbarrow.

Not only was the kooky presentation fabulous but the pate had a beautifully smooth consistency complemented perfectly with a crunchy topping.  I smothered this over the warm bread and finished it of with a smothering of sweet chutney.

My husband is a creature of habit and as soon as I saw calamari on the menu I knew this would be his first choice.

The calamari had a perfectly crispy coating that was served with a creamy mayonnaise and lightly dressed rocket leaves.

As a calamari connoisseur this came highly recommended from him.

For my main meal I had a delicately spiced Malaysian chicken curry served with fluffy, white basmati rice which was cooked perfectly.

My husband had a classic dish of steak and chips that was that little bit different due to the super tasty seasoning added to the chips.

I always like to save a bit of room for desert and I was so pleased I did when a gooey sticky toffee pudding was placed in front of me.

This finished off a sumptuous meal perfectly!

We couldn’t leave without sampling one or two of the cocktails.  I went for their namesake to start with and really impressed with the refreshing cocktail with a great little kick!

By now the bar area was filling up nicely and a live band had just begun their set.

We stayed and listened to the music and took in the atmosphere for a good few hours.

For me The Botonist offers so much from a place to come to grab a quick drink and a few bites of bar food to a whole evening experience with a beatiful meal and good music.

I had initially thought it was more suited to adults only but when I was shown the children’s menu of the usual favourites served in a fun way just as their adult dishes are it will most definitely be somewhere I will visit again as a family.

We were given a meal at the resturant for the purpose of the review and these are all my own honest opinions.

Creating Pandamonium At Chessington World Of Adventure

We were super excited to be invited to the press launch of the brand new show Pandamonium and the opening of the fabulous new Smokehouse restaurant at Chessington Worls Of Adventure.

I am always amazed with how many changes this great theme park makes from year to year and I have to say that they have excelled themselves with some fantastic new additions to the park this year.

We arrived at the Azteca Hotel to a cocktail reception where everyone got to have a catch up whist the children enjoyed getting their faces painted and getting up close and personal with some of Chessington’s animals.

From here we made our way to the brand new Smokehouse restaurant.  The restaurant was one of our former favourites where we would always have a pit stop to have a nice sit down meal where I liked a bit of calm away from the hustle and bustle of the park so I was a little aprehesive about the change.

I needn’t have worried as the improvements are more than I could have imagined.  They have created a cool, spacious welcoming restaurant serving gorgeous food.

We sampled creamy potato salad, crunchy coleslaw, melt in the mouth pulled pork, tasty beef brisket and a super yummy macaroni cheese.

As you can tell from our clear baskets the food was wonderful and this has easily become our new favourite.

Next stop was the brand new Pandamonium show which is positioned just next to the newly improved ‘trail of the Kings’.

The children all sat egerly awaiting the appearance of the pandas.  I have to admit when the animatronic Giant Pandas took to the stage I was quite taken back by how life like they were.  They graced the stage whist the actors engaged with the children, feeding them fun facts whist making them laugh throughout.

After taking a look through the ‘Trail Of The Kings’ we make our way back to the hotel for a stunning Asian themed buffet complete with oodles of entertainment for the children.

The boys were complety wiped out so after saying good night to the iguanas in the hotel reception we made our way to our room to get some rest before the adventures of the next day.

The themed rooms were outstanding and I loved it as much as the boys.  There were a set of cosy bunk beds for the children to sleep in adjacent to the main bedroom but as predicted they found our bed way more appealing!

Up bright and early we filled up on a huge breakfast.  There is so much to chose from and the children love to be able to walk around picking exactly what they want and getting a cheeky visit from a Madagascar character!

Straight after breakfast we had a quick walk outside to say hello to the monkeys. I meen there are not many hotels stays that allow you to do this are there!

We got given some wristbands which allowed us ‘fast track’  to the rides for the first hour of opening.  This is a great idea and is available to everyone that stays in the hotel.  It gives you that little bit of extra time to get on your favourite rides first.

We headed straight for the Bubbleworks which has been a family favourite since I was a child.

Little Truckers was next on the list followed closely by Tombblaster.

As we only had the youngest two with us there were no big rides today so we strolled around looking at the animals and climbing around Dragon’s Play area.

The last treat of the day was to the newly refurbished sweet shop.  There seemed to be so much more on offer and the bright decor was wonderful.

Chessington World Of Adventure has given us an unforgettable trip yet again and I would encourage you to get along this holiday to sample it for yourselves.

They are adding and improving all the time and with Go Ape and new a new glamping area being added soon this really is a trip not to be missed!

We were invited along to the press launch at Chessington World Of Adventure and these are all my own honest opinions.

Stepping Back In Time At The Ship Tavern

Nestled in a tiny alleyway hidden away from the hustle and bustle of Holburn you will find the treasure that is The Ship Tavern.

Feeling like I had stepped into a period drama scene my husband and I climbed the staircase inside the beautiful pub which lead us into the dining room.

Here we were greated by mahogany panelled walls, antique artwork and dim candlelight which made for a very welcoming atmosphere.

We were seated in a private booth which still allowed you to take in the beautiful surroundings.

The waiter kindly bought over a glass of wine whist my husband and I looked over the vast menu.

Traditional, home cooked pub food filled the menu but had a more elegant feel then your traditional ‘pub grub’.

I opted for the soft shell crab fritter with crab salad, caviar and chilli oil.  My husband went for his favourite option of calamari which came with a spring onion mayonnaise.

The calamari was a more than generous portion which allowed me to tuck in too! The spring onion mayonaise was something different for me but complemented the dish really well.

My crab was presented beautifully and once I cracked through the fritter itself I had a wonderful surprise to discover the caviar and crab salad hidden beneath.

For mains I had the Banbury duck breast with confit of duck leg faggot, Anna potatoes, buttered spring cabbage, caramelised plum and red wine jus.  My husband went down the more traditional route of steak and hand cut chips which were served with roasted vine tomatoes.

My dish was an explosion of flavours that all complimented each other wonderfully.  The duck was perfectly cooked and the sweetness from the caramelised plum set it of wonderfully.

A steak and chip option is always a winner and when cooked well can be a simple yet splendid meal.

The steak was beautifully tender and the crispy chips were a great accompaniment.

Due to my husband being a nut allergy sufferer desert was a no no for him which is not unusual but I went ahead and ordered the petit fours.

I always leave room for dessert as this is my favourite part of any menu.  For me petit fours are the perfect desert as it allows you to have a little bit of everything.

The different textures and flavours all worked really well together and more than satisfied my extremely sweet tooth!

If you are looking for sofisticated pub food with generous portions in a beautiful, historic setting than look no further than this stunning restaurant.
We went along to The Ship Tavern for the purpose of this review and they are all my own honest opinions.
